Fluid and Prism – Save the Web Browser for Surfing

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Everyday while working, I have to use numerous online web applications just to get one job done. Now, I do love having all (err…most) of my applications in the “cloud”, but it is easier to navigate through all of my open desktop applications than it is to navigate from one tab to another in Safari. Well, while surfing the web today, I came across a a life saver to help alleviate this headache. Enter Fluid.app for Mac users and Prism for PC users.

What are these mysterious things?

Fluid is a free Mac application (while Prism, a product from Mozilla, is a free Windows/Linux application) that creates Site Specific Browsers (SSBs). An SSB allows you to run a single web site or application as a stand-alone Mac application, independent of your other web browser windows or tabs. This way, it is always instantly available via the Dock or application switcher, with no fumbling of tabs. Also, if your browser crashes, your important sites (in SSBs) are kept safe from harm.

Basically any web application or web page even, that you visit regularly can be turned into one of these SSBs. Various webmail applications like GMail, Yahoo or Windows Live can be taken from the web and your browser and accessed quicker than a browser based bookmark.  Always accessing your WordPress blog, turn that into an SSB.  The options are almost unlimited.

If you are a fan of desktop widgets, then you will love these applications.  Download and try them today.
